Michels was not just a political sociologist but a member of the German
social democracy who moved on to the Italian party, and finally followed
Mussolini into fascism. Its interesting that, by the end, what he
complained about in terms of the socialist Left was the very thing that
suckered him into the Right.

I remember reading Michels' _Political Parties_ in graduate school, very
shortly after leafing the American SWP and found it enlightening. The
book's available as a digital pdf linked from
http://socserv2.socsci.mcmaster.ca/~econ/ugcm/3ll3/michels/
...or in html
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/MicPoli.html

It did strike me that what Michels labels as a discussion of "oligarchic
tendencies" ends up treating those tendencies as a kind of Weberian "iron
cage."
