> Socialism and Democracy is looking for someone to review THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF COMMUNISM by Michael Brown. This is a very difficult, but important book that we'd like to find a reviewer for. Brown's treatment of Communist historiography crosses the disciplines of sociology, history, philosophy and literary criticism. Brown's book analyzes the relationship between social movements, ideology and the process of incorporating the history of the socialist movements of the twentieth century into the study of progressive movements without offering simple moral judgments of good verses evil to establish an essentialism of the "good" left as if this were somehow possible. The book requires a close and careful reading of the U.S. communist party and other left organizations and the role these formations played in the U.S. progressive movements.

George doesn't mention this, but he and Michael Brown edited a
first-rate collection of articles on the CPUSA titled
"New Studies in the Politics and Culture of U.S. Communism" along with
Randy Martin and Frank Rosengarten. Frank, with millions of others,
passed through the Trotskyist movement briefly. Michael Brown is
sympathetic to the CP but a free thinker. I am sure this book will be a
great read.
