That is pretty remarkable. Though some of the NY Times' 48 remaining
readers clearly must have posted more than one comment to that story, so
how well that 60-15 ratio reflects the ratio of opinion among those
readers is not immediately clear.
Seriously though, there has indeed been a big shift in the discourse
over Israel online, even if that's almost entirely not the case on TV
(or in the pages of the NYT). This is demonstrated quite well on the
popular website Reddit, a "social news website" on which, to quote
Wikipedia, "users can browse and have the option to submit links to
content on the Internet or submit 'self' posts that contain original,
user-submitted text. Other users may then vote the posted links 'up' or
'down' with the most successful links gaining prominence by reaching the
front page. In addition, users can comment on the posted links and reply
to other commentators consequently forming a vibrant community."
Though highly pluralistic, a consensus has formed in said Reddit
"community" on a few issues, like that Star Wars is cool, gay people
should be able to enter into marriages and the military, Apple has
become evil, religion is bunk, the band Nickelback sucks and that
Zionism is full of shit.
