The main problem with this is that there ain't no such data.  What we  
see (at best!) is always a partial, selective, and approximate view,  
and the sources and methods are (at best!) open to question by  
specialists.  So our "analysis" is always "speculative," needing to be  
backed up by persuasive argument that our speculation is indeed  
largely correct.  Never in the domain of "social and economic data"  
will we find anything as indisputable as the statement Stimson wrote  
in his diary to the effect that the aim of US policy was to get the  
Japs to fire the first shot.
