[fwd for Gary McLennan (i'll get back to yo on the plain text thing soon]
I have been emboldened to contribute more to this cricket, oops sport
and politics thread. That what polite silence will get you. There is now
a series of inquests going on into all the matches Pakistan has lost.
What the authorities will do about it all is any one's guess.
I consider myself far from naive when it comes to matters cricket, but I
just woke up this morning with the thought that the reason why the
Pakistan cricket team kept dropping all those catches, was not that they
were hopeless in the field but that they were on a perverted bonus system.
Talk about loss of innocence...
On a more political level () there was an interesting article in the
London Times on the whole affair. It said that the cheating scandal
must not be allowed to lead to Pakistan's expulsion from the world
cricket community, as this would drive the country further into the
hands of Islamic extremists. Cricket it seems binds Pakistan to the
West. Hmmm, I'm not sure how I feel about that as a Marxist
In any case the real victims of this affair are the millions of
Pakistanis, especially those in England, who invested emotionally in the
team, only to be betrayed. No wonder they pelted the team bus with tomatoes.
Finally on corruption, in a country where the President is known as 'Mr
10%' is it any wonder that an 18 year old like Mohammed Amir, from a
village where there is no electricity, would bowl no-balls for money?
