tropical and winter storm outcomes here in the Northeast are
particularly sensitive to 20-40 mile differences in track East to West,
there being a great difference between a low pressure center over the
Atlantic, and one that goes inland. this particular low hugged the
coastline since North Carolina and, apparently, never completed its
eyewall replacement, and remember, warm ocean waters are vital to
tropical cyclone formation and continuation. so in this case its a bit
of thermodynamic luck. the computer models were quite accurate about
this storm, and the National Hurricane Center meteorologists were
cognizant of what the ever so slightly different tracks could produce.
but major news media have their own reasons for singing the wolf song.

due to the storm surge and flooding, it doesnt seem unreasonable that
NYC shut its subway system. and the rains have stopped here in CT but
the winds are still blowing.
