This essay asks how is it that liberals justify military humanism in the 
name of protecting freedom, human rights and democracy, even when it is 
pursued unilaterally by a self-appointed imperialist power. We will 
focus on the justifications put forward by Michael Ignatieff, the 
Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard 
University, whose prominent writings in the New York Times Magazine in 
the run-up to the war and during it exemplify the 'military humanism' 
that Ulrich Beck diagnosed.
