I heard the same thing from Richard Chávez, when he spoke at the Militant
Labor Forum in the Upper West Side of New York. He said that César once
remarked that those tomatoes taste like alfalfa.--TB

I believe that hard tomatoes originated at the University of California,
Davis.  The farmworkers began organizing.  A long dormant tomato harvester
project restarted & then they needed a hard tomato that could handle the
roughness of a machine.
