Sting Cancels Concert in Kazakhstan After Crackdown on Strikers

By JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.
Sting has thrown his support behind striking oil workers in Kazakhstan, abruptly canceling his concert that was scheduled for July 4 in the capital, Astana, after he learned of a government crackdown on the strikers.
“Hunger strikes, imprisoned workers and tens of thousands on strike represents a virtual picket line which I have no intention of crossing,” Sting, the 59-year-old British rocker, said in an online statement. Several thousand workers who work for a subsidiary of the state oil company went on strike May 26, complaining that their salaries had been cut and their lawyer imprisoned. The strike is only one conflict in a wave of labor unrest racking western Kazakhstan, crimping oil production in the former Soviet republic and angering the government of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who rarely tolerates dissent.
