-----------------------------------

Updated new edition, with a new introduction and a substantive new final chapter on the state of Venezuela under Chavez in 2011, and looking ahead to the 2012 elections.

This authoritative first-hand account of contemporary Venezuela places the country’s controversial and charismatic president in historical perspective, and assesses the success of his plans and programmes to transform Venezuela.

Welcomed on his initial election by the inhabitants of the teeming shanty towns of Caracas as their potential saviour, and greeted by Washington with considerable alarm, this former golpista-turned-democrat has undertaken the most wide-ranging transformation of oil-rich Venezuela for half a century, and dramatically affected the political debate throughout Latin America, with new progressive governments following suit in Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and now Peru.

With much debate, and much scepticism, about the type of summer that will follow the Arab Spring, the story of Hugo Chávez’s Bolivarian revolution is an inspiring example of how radical democratic change is possible

Since his first landslide victory in Venezuela's 1998 presidential election Hugo Chávez has won a series of elections (almost one a year) with a turnout and transparency that many Western regimes could only dream of, and still enjoys huge popular support. His brand of socialism has been spread not at the point of a sword but by example. However he has been repeatedly vilified in the West as, at best a wannabe dictator, at worst a tyrant comparable to Hitler (Donald Rumsfeld).

In 2002 a coup briefly pushed him from office as the result of a US-backed plot to wrest control of the world's fifth-biggest oil industry from Venezuelan hands. He has also faced consistent internal and external opposition and other US-backed covert ops throughout his presidency.

Richard Gott is a journalist and historian. He worked for the Guardian for many years, including as Latin America correspondent and features editor. He was in Bolivia when Che Guevara was killed, and, being the only person present who had met Che before, identified his body. In this substantially updated edition of his unique first-hand report from Venezuela, including a new chapter on the failed coup, the recall election and recent US covert interventions, Gott places Commandant Hugo Chávez, the charismatic and controversial President of Venezuela, in historical perspective. Examining Chávez’s plans and programmes and the support and opposition these attract, Gott argues that this unique experiment shows a new way forward, for Latin America and beyond.
