Don't see much of a refutation here. In fact, in denying a theory of
"self emancipation" Berlin backhandingly makes McPherson's point.

At any rate, both acknowledge Lincoln's contribution, no support in
either for the bout of Lincoln bashing that Spielberg's film seems to
have generated in some quarters of the left.

Its like arguing over which is more important, the steam or the piston?
Obviously you have to have both, in times of great crisis. Berlin bends
the stick one way, McPherson the other.

With co-workers saying that the film made them want to know more about
US history, I'm happy, whatever the Hollywood liberalism inevitable in
