DW: "Venezuela will continue to be the biggest producer of hydro-carbons on
the continent for some time (though production in Brazil, but not
reserves, could in theory overtake Venezuela). And China will be the
world biggest consumer of coal, with India slowly catching up.
Developing countries are going to continue to develop."
Reply: The point is that China and India are continental size economies, with abundant raw material availability and an industrial and agricultural infrastructure developed to a certain extent. The service is also growing there. They can switch over priority from one sector to another when conditions change.
Such a possibility does not exist in smaller countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba or many smaller countries in the world. So it will not be correct to equate India and China with smaller economies.
