As Leo Tolstoy suggested, however, to a great extent this could have
been viewed as a war of liberation of peoples oppressed under
feudalism and Tsarist absolutism. In War and Peace Tolstoy describes
people coming forward to the local noble with leaflets handed out by
the Grand Armee talking about how they were going to free the serfs,
victims of a medieval form of involuntary servitude akin to slavery
that was only abolished in 1863 around the same time as Lincoln's
Emancipation Proclamation in the US. For what it's worth, an ally of
Napoleon was a small country called the United States of America that
at the same time was fighting its own war against Napoleon's enemy,
Britain, a fact obscured since 1914 by our 20th Century alliance with
Britain.
