Greece: SYRIZA pipped at the post; photos, videos of SYRIZA's final
    election rally, Athens <http://links.org.au/node/2914>

STOP PRESS, June 18, 2012 -- The Coalition of the Radical Left, SYRIZA,
just failed in it's second attempt to become the largest party in
Greece's parliament, winning 26.9% of the vote in the June 17 general
election, up from 17%. The right-wing New Democracy party came in first
with almost 29.7%. SYRIZA was up against enormous odds, with the weight
of Europe's ruling classes unleashing an all-out propaganda offensive
against it.
The refusal of sections of the left to form a united front
<http://links.org.au/node/2863>in the election also damaged SYRIZA's
chances of coming in first and gaining the bonus 50 seats in parliament
(the Communist Party KKE saw its vote drop to to 4.5% and the far-left
Antarsya's vote barely registered at 0.33%). The total far-left vote
this time was around 32%; in the May 6 general election the three
radical left parties combined won 27% (SYRIZA 17%, KKE 8.5%, Antarsya 1.2%).

Australian socialists: 'No imperialist military intervention in
    Syria!' <http://links.org.au/node/2908>

*Socialist Alliance* (Australia) statement
June 13, 2012 -- Socialist Alliance, posted at /Links International
Journal of Socialist Renewal /-- Since the uprising against the
government of Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011 the death toll in
Syria is now estimated to have exceeded 10,000. As the violence
escalates, Western government leaders are openly canvassing launching a
military intervention. We oppose imperialist military intervention.
Socialist Alliance supports the Syrian people's right to rise up for
democracy and economic justice. We recognise the secular and
anti-imperialist nature of much of the mass democratic opposition.
We do not recognise the Syrian National Council, or any other exile
elements now unilaterally being promoted by the imperialist powers, as
representative of the Syrian uprising.
We condemn the violence of the Syrian government and the killings by
religious sectarian gangs that are directly or indirectly supported by
the imperialists or the Syrian regime.
The Syrian people have a right to use arms to defend themselves from the
violence of government military and paramilitary forces.

Beautiful green world? On the myth of the green capitalist economy

By the *Rosa Luxemburg Foundation *

June 13, 2012 -- /Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal/ --
The "green economy": It will stop climate change and the extinction of
species and in so doing will create high growth rates and millions of
jobs. It's seen as a miraculous weapon. Through it, global capitalism
will be stabilised. And then it will be sustainable as well. But what is
the green economy?

System or Siege? Samuel Farber misses the main cause of Cuba's
    problems <http://links.org.au/node/2911>

        */Cuba since the revolution of 1959: a critical assessment/
        *By Samuel Farber
        Haymarket Books, Chicago, 2011

Review by *Chris Slee*
June 13, 2012 -- Samuel Farber was born in Cuba, but moved to the United
States in 1958. He is an emeritus professor of political science at
Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, and has been
involved in the socialist movement for over 50 years. He has written
extensively on Cuba, from a point of view highly critical of the Cuban
government. His views are promoted by sections of the US left, in
particular the International Socialist Organization. While many of his
criticisms have some validity, in my view he downplays the achievements
of the Cuban revolution, and underestimates the impact of the US
blockade in causing the problems and difficulties that Cuba faces.

Lars Lih: Bolshevism and revolutionary social democracy

By *Lars Lih*
June 7, 2012 -- Lenin's pamphlet /"Leftwing" communism /-- his last work
of more-than-article size -- was written in spring 1920 in order to be
distributed to the delegates of the 2nd Congress of the Communist
International, or Comintern. The message that Lenin intended to send
cannot be understood apart from the particular circumstances of this event.

Links seeks to promote the international exchange of information,
experience of struggle, theoretical analysis and views of political
strategy and tactics within the international left. It is a forum for
open and constructive dialogue between active socialists coming from
different political traditions. It seeks to bring together those in the
international left who are opposed to neoliberal economic and social
policies. It aims to promote the renewal of the socialist movement in
the wake of the collapse of the bureaucratic model of "actually existing
socialism" in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
