[Marxism] Education and Capitalism Haymarket Book Launches

Come meet the authors of a new book on capitalism and education that traces
Marxist theories of education under capitalism; outlines the historical
educational experiences of emergent bilingual and African American
students; recaps the history of teachers’ unions; analyzes the neoliberal
attack on public schools under Obama; critically appraises Paolo Freire’s
legacy; and makes the historical link between social revolution and
struggles for literacy.


*Adrienne Johnstone* has taught in public schools since 2000.  She ran for
president of United Educators of San Francisco  (NEA/AFT Local 61) in 2009
with a slate of candidates in the reform caucus Educators for a Democratic
Union (EDU).  She has written for*International Socialist Review* and *
Socialistworker.org*.

*Sarah Knopp* has been teaching public school in Los Angeles Unified School
District since 2000, is a teachers' union activist, and the co-editor
of *Education
and Capitalism* (Haymarket Books 2012)

*Elizabeth Terzakis* teaches English and Reading at Cañada College in
Redwood City, California, is campus  co-chair for AFT 1493, and contributes
to the *International Socialist Review*.
