[Marxism] Obama on gay marriage, like a Galapagos finch

Support for gay marriage rights has risen sharply over the past four years, especially among Democratic core constituencies like blacks and youth, so the comments by Biden, Caroline Kennedy, and Arne Duncan sound like typical trial balloons in an election year:

"Some of Mr. Obama's supporters have made the case to the White House that the president has nothing to lose by endorsing gay marriage. Polls show gay marriage gaining support among an increasing number of Americans. A March Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll showed 49% of Americans now say they approve of gay marriage, up from 40% shortly after Mr. Obama took office in 2009.

"Voters in some key states that Mr. Obama hopes to win in November will be faced with the issue this year. North Carolina, home to the 2012 Democratic National Convention, votes on an amendment Tuesday to ban gay marriage. Mr. Obama opposes the amendment and any other action to restrict gay-marriage rights.

"The president's political team has paid attention to polling on gay marriage, particularly among African-American voters who are key to the campaign's re-election strategy. The Journal/NBC poll showed African-American support for gay marriage rose from 32% in 2009 to 50% in March. Support for gay marriage is also a stance that could energize young voters, whose backing Mr. Obama needs in November."
