See Robert H. Eisenman's book on James the Brother of Jesus etc.
Much speculation in that book, as is inevitable given the subject matter and historic record (or lack thereof). There is some reason to believe that Paul, or his family. may have been a convert to Judaism. Further Paul doesn't seem to have known much or any Hebrew, which is inconsistent with his claim to have been a "pharisee's pharisee." SR

Romanus' was a legal status, not an ethnicity or a religion.
