The behavior of the social democratic left in Italy is pretty consistent with their past record, dating back to the 1990s when they supported efforts to balance the budget so that Italy could qualify for full membership in the Eurozone. And this, in turn, is quite consistent with the behaviors of most center-left parties around the world since the ending of the cold war (i.e. New Labour in Britain, the Australian Labour Party, the SPD in Germany, and the Democrats in the US, etc.).
