Incredible report on the history of Yarmouk camp, of self-organizing by its
residents,
deadly manipulation by the regime and its allies, opportunistic actions by
disconnected
FSA brigades, and more. Incredible accounts of discussions and action by
camp residents during the Nakba and Naksa
Day actions, of attitudes toward the regime and opposition, etc.
Please forward, tweet and post on Facebook.
The author will be speaking in DC on Thursday.

With all of Syria engulfed since spring 2011 in spiraling destruction, the
fate of the country's small Palestinian population receives scant
attention. In order to highlight the humanitarian crisis currently
unfolding in Yarmouk, The Institute for Palestine Studies and the *Journal of
Palestine Studies*
<http://secure-web.cisco.com/auth=11gSurrRF3dH50ZFKb4j2Jmc2ftUXt&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.palestine-studies.org%2Fjournals.aspx%3Fhref%3Dcurrent%26jid%3D1>has

available Nidal Bitari's report, which will also be available in the
upcoming issue of the *Journal* issue 169, "*Yarmouk Refugee Camp and the

".

This report focuses on that community through the lens of Damascus's Yarmuk
camp, the largest Palestinian concentration in the country. Starting with
the 2011 Nakba and Naksa Day demonstrations, the report provides a detailed
account of how the camp has lived the turmoil, highlighting in particular
its determined efforts to preserve its neutrality and the factors that
ultimately led to the fatal entry of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) into Yarmuk
in December 2012. The ethnographic portrait of Syria's Palestinians before
the uprising, their life in the camp (including the role of the factions),
their privileges and unique integration, makes what the author sees as the
destruction of the community evenmore tragic.
