In the next couple of days I am going to be writing something on
Thailand as a follow-up to my article on "What's Going on in the
Ukraine". Both of these nations are undergoing powerful struggles in
which class lines are not clearly demarcated. I think that everybody
could benefit from the article by Giles Ji Ungpakom who is undoubtedly
the most influential Marxist thinker from Thailand. The article, which
is an excerpt from his "Thailand and the Crisis of Democracy", provides
an essential background on the situation that has developed over the
past ten years or so over the Thaksin presidency and the "red shirt"
movement that provides its activist base. Giles is a member of the red
shirts and as such is deeply hostile to the largely urban and
middle-class opposition called the "yellow shirts". I will be arguing
that it is a mistake to have too close an association with the Thaksin
group.
