On the 100th Anniversary of the Outbreak of World War I: The Struggle
against Imperialism and War

The Marxist Understanding of Modern Imperialism and the Revolutionary
Program in Light of the Increasing Rivalry between the Great Powers,
Revolutionary Uprisings, and Counterrevolutionary Setbacks

1. As we approach the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I,
the historic crisis of world capitalism is again exacerbating the
rivalry between the great imperialist powers. The most obvious examples
of this are the recent flare ups between NATO and Russia over the crisis
in the Ukraine and the tensions between China and Japan, as well as the
USA, in the South China Sea. While an armed confrontation between these
imperialist powers is unlikely in the near future, it is obvious that,
on the centennial of the start of World War I in 1914, a new Cold War
has started. This Cold War will prove to have been the preamble to
future wars – first between proxies and later between the great powers
themselves – if the international working class will not have prevented
this in time by overthrowing the imperialist ruling class and taking
power via the socialist revolution.
