Thailand: Growing resistance to coup smashes political myths
    <http://links.org.au/node/3871>

By *Giles Ji Ungpakorn*
May 26, 2014 -- The most striking thing about the latest coup d'etat in
Thailand is the speed and size of the anti-coup protests. For the last
three days, immediately following the coup, mass protests of ordinary
people have simultaneously erupted in many areas of Bangkok but also in
Chiangmai and other towns. This is history in the making.

Ireland: Left surge in South's local and European elections
    <http://links.org.au/node/3875>

By *Henry Silke*, Dublin
[Stop Press, May 28: In further counting, Sinn Fein has won a third MEP
seat, meaning it is represented in each Euro electoral district in the
South.]

May 27, 2014 -- Over the past few days there has been a minor earthquake
in Irish politics. Sinn Fein has made a breakthrough into mainstream
southern Irish politics, almost doubling its vote to 17% nationally in
municipal polls (and more than 20% in the European election). This was
alongside a surge of electoral success from those further to the left
and independents.

Britain: UKIP leads race to the gutter <http://links.org.au/node/3870>

By *Liam Mac Uaid*
May 24, 2014 -- From the coverage of the English local election results
and the relentless Nigel Farage mania you would think that the United
Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) had romped to first place with the
Conservative Party (Tories) a close second. You'd also be forgiven for
thinking that the Labour Party had received a hammering and the Liberal
Democrats (Lib Dems) don't exist. The main story in most of the press,
from the BBC to the /Daily Telegraph/, is that Labour is in crisis as a
result of the election.

Denmark: Fresh openings for Red-Green Alliance as it marks 25 years
    <http://links.org.au/node/3869>

By *Liam Flenady*
May 24, 2014 -- Denmark's Red-Green Alliance (RGA) marked 25 years since
its founding at a national conference on May 16 to 18, 2014. A radical
left unity project marking 25 years in existence is itself a cause for
celebration, but this conference was able to celebrate much more. After
about 20 years as a fringe party in Danish politics, the RGA has
recently emerged as a significant force.

Crimea: Be wary of attempts to use rights of Tatars to justify
    violence and war <http://links.org.au/node/3868>

By *Roger Annis*
May 24, 2014 -- The situation of the Tatar population of the Crimea
peninsula is being cited to discredit the decision in March by the
people of the Crimea region to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian
Federation. This article looks at some of the history of the Tatars and
also at the real situation today as best it can be discerned from afar.

Sonny Melencio: Asia needs ALBA-style regionalism not US 'pivot' and
    'ASEAN integration' <http://links.org.au/node/3864>

*Peter Boyle* interviews *Sonny Melencio*
May 22, 2014 -- Sonny Melencio is chairperson of the Partido Lakas ng
Masa (PLM, Party of the Labouring Masses). At its recent national
convention, the PLM launched a discussion about /Bayanihan Socialism/,
which drawing on lessons from the Latin American experience links the
egalitarian principles of socialism with national and Indigenous
historical experiences and traditions, as a means to popularise the
ideas of socialism to a mass audience in the Philippines. Melencio is
also involved in a new coalition against the established "political
dynasties" in the Philippines, called Alliance for Truth, Integrity and
Nationalism (ATIN).

India: Modi 'promised the moon' but his real agenda will emerge --
    Kavita Krishnan <http://links.org.au/node/3863>

*Peter Boyle* interviews *Kavita Krishnan*
May 21, 2014 -- Kavita Krishnan has become a well-known international
spokesperson for the movement against sexual violence in India that grew
after an horrific gang rape of a student in Delhi in 2012. She is also a
national leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist)
Liberation, which won more than a million votes but failed to win any
seats in the general election in India, which the right-wing
Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Narendra Modi,
won by a landslide.

*By John Riddell*
May 15, 2014 -- Paul Kellogg's review in /Socialist Studies/ of my
edition of the Communist International's 1922 world congress raises two
probing questions regarding the legacy of the Communist International
(Comintern) in Lenin's time.

Deadly consequences of continued production of industrial chemicals
    <http://links.org.au/node/3861>

By *Coral Wynter*/
The central problem of our age has therefore become the contamination of
man's total environment with such substances of incredible potential for
harm---substances that accumulate in the tissue of plants and animals
and even penetrate the germ cells to shatter or alter the very material
of heredity upon which the shape of the future depends. -- /Rachel
Carson,/Silent Spring/, 1962

May 22, 2014 -- There is an epidemic of diseases now sweeping the
industrialised countries. These include obesity, diabetes type 2, high
infertility rates affecting both men and women, high blood pressure,
thyroid and central nervous system as well as cancers, mainly breast and
prostate cancers. In addition to all of this, immune deficiencies.

Links seeks to promote the international exchange of information,
experience of struggle, theoretical analysis and views of political
strategy and tactics within the international left. It is a forum for
open and constructive dialogue between active socialists coming from
different political traditions. It seeks to bring together those in the
international left who are opposed to neoliberal economic and social
policies. It aims to promote the renewal of the socialist movement in
the wake of the collapse of the bureaucratic model of "actually existing
socialism" in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
