My guess is that John Bellamy Foster has almost zero interest in Syria
except as it figures into his analysis of imperialism. To be able to
review Gilbert's book, as I did for CounterPunch, requires some
engagement with Syrian society. Most of the people with such a
background orient to Jaddaliya or MERIP. In fact, now that I think about
it, you find very little interest in Syrian society at any of the
flagship Marxist institutions from Socialist Register to NLR. A fucking
