There are tiny layers within the Sanders ranks out here who will say “stuff it” to whatever horror shows the clinton people will drag out and vote third party come what may.

Question the "tiny layers" part. May be true of older registered Dems but what of independents and young, the "large Dem and indy turn-out" supposedly needed by Clinton. Sanders is, whatever the yes buts, raising support from young people that's probably unprecedented and raising the banner of socialism with positive response. Defining socialism more accurately depends on what happens then. Numbers of younger voters who are in this because of their identification with message about big donors owning the two parties and the rigged system, jobs, health, high tuition colleges, climate - and who may not so much opt out for third party candidate as stay at home or go Trump. This is a time when much is up in the air, there for the grabbing.

I've been doing phones for Sanders. Some formerly registered NY Dems in my small sampling of 400 or more voters reached, despite the bogey man stuff and with the weak party identification prevalent, actually are already declared for Trump. And Jeff Weaver raises possibility that Sanders campaign may spend the summer seeking delegates, instead of or before endorsing Clinton http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/jeff-weaver-sanders-convention-superdelegates. This is the first time in my lifetime that the Democratic Party primary process is being used in grounding a campaign on flaying the major Dem donors, and the process generally, with results still to be determined. Sanders and staff may well be still mulling what happens, what leverage they'll have and depending on how closely they're listening to their constituency and who in the campaign is making the decisions, how they'll use leverage to best serve that constituency's interests.

And this is circulating today: https://citizensagainstplutocracy.wordpress.com/2015/11/23/how-sanders-supporters-can-tilt-the-playing-field-in-his-direction/. Not so much a pitch for a movement independent of the Dems but a move away.
