Of course the success of Reagan from the opposite side of the US political spectrum does not seem to register in this calculus.
The political evolution of Gary Hart, as described in one of the chapters in Rick Perlstein's Imaginary Bridge, suggests that the subsequent political evolution of Gary Hart and his successors, like Clinton, were more of a continuation of the politics of McGovern than a break or reaction to them. Certainly, Hart could oppose certain military adventures of the mid 1970s at the same time as he opposed the New Deal/Great Society liberalism of some of his Senate Colleagues. SR
