This article conflates antislavery with abolitionism and abolitionism with
an implicit hostility to white supremacism..

Most Northern voters--and certainly Lincoln--had become "antislavery" by
the later 1850s.  That did not make them abolitionist in any way.  Not by a
long shot.

Even when the Lincoln administration adopted emancipation as a war goal,
emancipation wasn't abolitionism.

And, of course, abolitionism covered a range of groups and approaches.  We
should remember that it did not necessarily require the rejection of white
