(So the Yellow Vests are the alt-right because they were protesting
increased taxes on gasoline meant to cut down on greenhouse gas
emissions and fund alternative energy. Some kind of analysis of the
French state's fiscal policies is badly needed here. And fast. Yesterday
I unfriended Anton Shekhotsov on FB. He's the author of "Russia and the
Far Right", a very good book that is flawed by in its inability to see
the connection between neoliberalism and the alt-right. He is a big-time
supporter of people like Macron and Merkel who is beside himself over
these protests. He smeared it all as alt-right because of the support
from Le Pen, including the anti-Semitic "comedian" Dieudonné M'bala
M'bala whose photo he posted on social media as if it was a smoking gun.
Odd to see someone so good at distinguishing ordinary Ukrainians
protesting for democracy and an end to corruption from Privy
Sektor/Svoboda using the same methods as RT.com.)

The fiery street protests challenging French President Emmanuel Macron
over his proposed higher taxes on gasoline and the young climate
activists of the Sunrise Movement who sat in at prospective House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office might seem like antagonists – one
resisting, the other seeking, faster and more ambitious movement away
from fossil fuels. I’m not so sure about that, though. Some deep
currents connect the two movements, currents that raise a fundamental
challenge for the climate movement – how to shed the issue’s historic
framing as a question of austerity and sacrifice.
