Dead human labour returns as a force of nature, imbued with human
purpose. This, as Kohei Saito points out, is the historical-materialist
thesis on technology. "Nature is man's inorganic body," says Marx in a
formulation that begs for scrutiny. "Nature is his body, with which he
must remain in continuous interchange if he is not to die." The
humanisation of nature arising from this interchange, metabolism,
Stoffwechsel, is one of the meanings of technology. Technology is, among
other things, matter imbued with human purpose. But a fundamental
insight of psychoanalysis is that human purposes exceed their purpose.
