The eponymous 'Five Stars' of the Italian populist movement (Movimento 5 Stelle, M5S) of that name refer to the party’s five core values:

~ public water access,
~ sustainable transportation,
~ sustainable development,
~ a right to internet access, and
~ environmentalism.

In foreign policy, the M5S has disapproved military interventions of the West in the Greater Middle East (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya) as well as any notion of American intervention in Syria.

A coalition government of the M5S and the Lega would make young Luigi Di Maio prime minister and cause dyspepsia in DC and Brussels. —CGE

The Five Star party founded by ex-TV comedian Beppo Grillo and now led by Luigi Di Maio, took over 30% of the vote and will be the largest single party in the new parliament. It presented itself as an anti-establishment, anti-corruption party. Previously it had called for a referendum to leave the EU but recently dropped that and switched to social policies. In the election, it proposed a Universal Basic Income (UBI) for all, which won it many votes from the young unemployed and poor, particularly in the south.
