[Marxism] Grocery Wars Turn Small Chains Into Battlefield Casualties

“'It’s not a level playing field,' Mr. Porter [head of Fairway] said in an
interview. 'Competing against Amazon is like competing against the
government or a military commissary.''

Porter seems to be referring to size differences. But the huge grocery
chains by expanding and consolidating are de facto removing their
operations from the market. To paraphrase Ernest Mandel's analysis of GM,
giant chains don't have a market within their operations.

However the article makes clear that most of the workers being impacted are
victims not (yet) of Amazon/Walmart et al., but rather of the private
equity firms having loaded these companies with debt.
