Is the call on Verso to stop publishing Blumenthal a call for censorship?
If this were a call to some mainstream capitalist publisher, such as Dutton
for example, then an argument could be made. Even that, though, has to be
qualified. Any serious capitalist publishing house, just like any serious
capitalist journal, has certain standards as far as accuracy. I think it's
a fair question to ask whether Blumenthal meets those standards. Of course,
none of us has seen his latest piece, but I think it's fair to guess that
it's about as accurate as what he's been churning out so far.
In any case, though, we're not talking about a mainstream capitalist
publisher; we're talking about Verso, which bills itself as the foremost
publisher of "radical" books. Would Verso publish a book by a supporter of
Netanyahu? Or of Nerandra Modi? Or Trump or Putin, for that matter? If so,
then they have abandoned their claim to be a "radical" publishing house.
So, why should a book by a supporter of Assad be published by them? What's
I support the original letter 100%.
