Associate Planner

This position will use your:
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of urban and regional planning; land use 
development codes and implementation strategies; methods of analyzing 
social, economic, population and land use trends; current literature, 
informational sources and research methods; presentation techniques to 
commissions and boards; statistical principles and design philosophies; 
interactive team participation skills; and methods of providing a high 
level of customer service to the general public.
Ability to:
Work efficiently and successively in a diverse, progressive growing 
community; quickly establish priorities, manage multiple projects and 
work effectively to complete assignments on time; be committed to 
coordinate effectively with public officials, co-workers and members of 
other departments; be highly flexible and willing to view change as new 
challenges arise; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in 
writing; and to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious 
working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; check 
building plans for conformance with land use, architectural and zoning 
regulations and suggest changes to achieve compliance; assist with 
updating, implementing and administrating of citys general plan; 
interpret planning, zoning programs and regulations to the general 
public, and perform professional planning work with minimum direct 
supervision.
Skill to:
Conduct planning studies involving the correlation and assembly of 
information involving current and long range planning and land 
development; prepare written reports and present reports in a clear, 
concise manner to various commissions and committees; create maps (GIS), 
charts and diagrams; seek grant funding; serve as staff to a variety of 
commissions and committees; assist with preparing general plan and 
zoning code amendment recommendations to implement the city's land use 
development strategies, review planning applications and plans submitted 
to the Planning Commission and provide recommendations on approval, 
denial or modification of applications; effectively use communication, 
presentation, analytical skills and problem solving techniques; assist 
and provide information to the public regarding the preparation and 
filing of planning applications.
Candidates must possess the following:
Minimum Qualifications:
Three years experience as an assistant planner.
Training:
Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university with major 
course work in urban or regional planning, architecture, landscape 
architecture, public administration or related field and at least three 
(3) years experience as an associate level planner. Master's Degree in 
urban or regional planning preferred.
Special Requirements and Working Conditions:
Requires mental and physical ability to work in a standard office 
environment and operate office equipment including computer, fax 
machine, etc.; may perform phone and public counter duties; must be able 
to read fine print, maps and blueprints; must maintain accurate records 
and files; may be required to attend evening meetings; must possess a 
valid drivers license, and have the ability to travel to different 
sites and locations.
