Ethnic Communities Intern Job Description

The Ethnic Communities Intern at the Salt Lake City office of the 
International Rescue Committee will serve in an assistant capacity to 
the Ethnic Communities Coordinator. The internship will provide the 
selected intern with experience working in a nonprofit organization and 
provide a thorough understanding of issues facing the refugee community. 
The intern will also gain knowledge of community organizing and 
nonprofit management issues, experience in newsletter publication, 
resource development, outreach, and event organization. The internship 
is an unpaid position. Hours are flexible but, depending on event dates, 
may require specific evenings and weekends. The position will require an 
estimated 15 hours per week.

Projects:

" Somali Bantu Community  Assist in implementing a training plan 
developed by Master of Social Work students from the University of Utah 
for leaders in the newly arriving Somali Bantu community. Help 
coordinate other leadership and computer trainings for the community.

" Website and Graphic Design  Search for community resources to assist 
refugee community organizations with website development, web hosting, 
and graphic design of organizational brochures, etc.

" Refugee Association Directory  Develop directory and keep it 
up-to-date with accurate contact information and service descriptions. 
In the process of contacting these organizations, assess community needs 
and note ideas for trainings and resources to meet those needs.

" Monthly Newsletter  Produce a monthly newsletter for the refugee 
community. Develop a format for the newsletter (pdf and e-newsletter), 
research potential topics of interest, include community events, news 
and information relating to refugee issues nationally and locally, 
services and programs available to refugees, and grant/funding 
opportunities.

" Training/Information Sessions  Assist in planning training and 
information sessions for refugee community-based organizations on topics 
relating to nonprofit management and capacity building.

needed.
