The University of Utah seeks to fill the campus-wide Sustainability 
Coordinator position with a passionate leader committed to excellence 
and to effecting change. The Sustainability Coordinator will be 
responsible for shifting the University community towards greater campus 
sustainability by advancing new and existing programs and innovations to 
promote sustainable practices and awareness throughout the University 
and the wider community. The ongoing commitment of the University 
administration to fostering campus sustainability has led to important 
successes in reducing resource use by the campus. The results of these 
efforts, however, have not received the visibility that is needed to 
encourage additional efforts by students, staff, faculty and 
administrators.  The University of Utah has created a new Office of 
Sustainability, funded for a 1-year pilot program, to be staffed by the 
Sustainability Coordinator and a part-time, Interim Director.  The 
Sustainability Coordinator will have principal responsibility for: 1) 
starting and maintaining a pan-campus communication network focused on 
issues of sustainability, 2) working with the Interim Director to 
develop a detailed 5-year plan for institutionalizing strategies for 
creating a more sustainable campus, and 3) implementing actions that 
lead to a reduced campus ecological footprint during the pilot year. The 
Sustainability Coordinator will engage faculty, staff, students, 
administrators, and campus committees in a wide range of programs. The 
position creates and facilitates collaborations between the academic and 
nonacademic sectors by coordinating common goals and identifying 
opportunities between different offices and departments.  The 
Sustainability Coordinator will develop proposals for review, plan the 
execution of projects, evaluate initiatives and disseminate results. 
Responsibilities include internal education and outreach, coordinating 
the Sustainability Task Force, maintaining a web-based clearinghouse of 
information resources, and supervising/training volunteers (students, 
faculty, staff) and student interns. During the pilot year the 
Sustainability Coordinator will work with the Interim Director to: 1) 
define sustainability goals, 2) identify performance metrics, and 3) 
develop a long range plan for the Office of Sustainability at the 
University of Utah.
Bachelor's degree in a related field plus one year directly related 
experience or equivalency required. Demonstrated ability to work 
independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. 
Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize 
conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective 
communication skills are also required.

The ideal candidate; however, will have a Master?s degree or 
commensurate experience and knowledge of sustainability issues, 
initiatives and networks found in academic or health care settings. 
Excellent skills in communicating with diverse sectors of the university 
community are expected, including: technical writing, public speaking 
and oral presentation.  Experience in implementing successful programs 
from conception to closure is desired. The position requires someone 
with leadership skills who can shift easily between working 
independently, leading a team, or functioning as an effective team 
member.  The ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work is 

Work Schedule
Full time, 40 hrs/wk; This is a one-year temporary position that may be 
extended pending funding approval.
