City of Fruita
The City of Fruita is a vibrant, growing, home-rule city seeking a City Manager for a community of
13,000 people. Fruita is located along the I-70 corridor in Mesa County on the Western Slope of the
Colorado Rockies. Fruita is a community that values its small town atmosphere, outdoor recreation,
music, community events, and historic downtown. The community is well known for mountain biking
but also offers many other amenities including the Colorado National Monument, hiking trails, scenic
landscapes, many cultural opportunities, camping and rafting on the Colorado River. Major ski resorts
are located within a 2-hour drive and local ski slopes are within 1-hour, making Fruita a popular yearround
location for tourists and locals alike.
The City Manager reports to a Mayor and six member City Council. Bi-annually, following the City
Council election, the City Council adopts broad goals and policies and relies on the City Manager, as
the Chief Administrative officer, to implement them. The Fruita City Charter gives the City Manager
authority to direct and supervise all departments of the city and further gives the City Manager the
right to take part in City Council discussions and make recommendations to the City Council and
Mayor concerning the affairs of the city. The City Council encourages a confident, active City
Manager that can provide high quality leadership to the organization. The City Council embraces the
role of the City Manager as the administrative CEO and Council policy advisor. The current City
Manager is leaving after serving 12 consecutive years in the position.
The ideal candidate is a goal-oriented, energetic leader with a track record of successful city
administration and leadership. The successful candidate will be a proactive and pragmatic leader with
a high level of integrity. The ideal candidate will be an open-minded team leader who can partner with
a very professional and experienced set of Department Directors and will embrace governmental
transparency and collaborative decision making. A very open, friendly and professional style will
serve the Manager well as he/she addresses the many issues and that face Fruita. The new manager will
be a creative problem solver able and willing to present solutions to the Mayor and Council. Finally,
the ability to effectively work with other governments, non-profits, and community groups will be
essential to the success of this position.
The City Manager will lead a successful, professional and motivated organization of 65 full-time
employees and 77 part-time employees. Currently, the City has a $20 million dollar operating and
The candidates for the position must have a Bachelor's degree, with a Masters in Public
Administration (MPA) degree or related field strongly preferred. Candidates should have a minimum
of three to five years of experience in a similar position, or as a deputy city manager in a larger
organization. Salary is negotiable with a hiring range expected to be between $97,000 - $102,000
depending on qualifications. Excellent benefits, including a 457 plan, vehicle allowance, as well as
paid health and dental care for the candidate and family are provided.
